a After the Klondike gold rush, both the U.S. and Canada realized the importance of the Alaskan Panhandle because it was the shortest route to the Canadian goldfields. The boundary between the two countries had been created in 1825 but the position of the border was still in dispute. Canada wanted the border to be moved farther back so that the productive town of Skagway would be part of Canada. The Americans wanted it to remain the same. The continentalists thought that Canada should join the United States so that there would be no dispute over borders.
