What were the aims of Agrippina and what methods did she use to achieve them.
Agrippina was a very determined political player, not adverse to lubricious blandishments, which can be seen as a strong reason why she became a powerful woman. Agrippina was seeking to replace the Claudian Tiberius with her offspring. As Leadbetter says The example set by mother to her daughters is significant. She was no stranger to power, she craved it absolutely, but for her family.
Agrippina's marriage to Ahenobarbus in 28 was to benefit the family, not Agrippina. As Tacitus says, Ahenobarbus was not chosen at random from the nobility, but he was part of the old nobility. This marriage gave Agrippina what she needed to be a force in Roman politics, a son Nero. Nero to Agrippina was a dynastic weapon for her, to ensure her future existence of power.
