One major theme in The Odyssey is the Quest of Telemachus. This theme involves how Telemachus becomes a man while he is on a journey to find his father, Odysseus. In the epic, the reader witnesses how Telemachus enters manhood while he is on a physical and emotional journey to find his father. Inspired by Athena, ravaging suitors, and Penelope’s pain, Telemachus learns more about the world and his father, and eventually turns his views and gaining confidence as a man.
The first step that Telemachus takes to become a man is what he does before he sets sail for sandy Pylos and Sparta due to the inspiration of Athena, Penelope’s pain and the ravaging suitors. ... But if you decide
the fare is better, richer here, destroying one man’s goods and going
scot-free, all right then carve away! ...
The words of the young Telemachus reveal Athena’s success in inspiring the him. Telemachus faces an assembly of suitors and tells the suitors to leave his house and feast in other places, and if the suitors refuse, he will pray to the gods and hope they will be destroyed.
