IS there a correlation between religion and crime?
Religion has always been a keystone in the environment known as society. The formation of religions have molded our laws and set our general moral standards for as long as they have existed. This study is going to compare the effects of religion to crime committed in society. The topic of religious practice has always fascinated me mainly because I was raised in a household of no religion. The norms that people followed and what we feel we are capable of always intrigued me. So, when I grew up it was no surprise that I wanted to study forensics and behavioral science. In my studying, I had already learned from a sociological standpoint the hellfire hypothesis and the rational choice theory. The hellfire hypothesis states "religion detours crime through the threat of supernatural sanctions and promotes normative behavior through the promise of a supernatural reward" (Bajer 2001). The rational choice theory is simply that "individuals who strongly identify with religion will feel shame from committing deviant acts" (Bajer 2001)...
