Casey at the Bat, and Fans in the Stands
"Casey at the Bat", by Ernest Thayer, is one of the greatest sports poems ever
written. The poem is labeled as the greatest for many reasons. It displays great fan devotion and glorifies one of Americas most popular pastimes, a baseball game. Thayer uses dialogue that appeals to the reader's ears, and images that paint a picture in ones head. Through this, the poet demonstrates the fans' involvement, and makes the game dramatic.
For example, Thayer conveys the dynamic experience of the game through the out
bursts of the crowd; "Kill him! Kill the Umpire!"(9.5). This scripted dialogue is a bit theatrical; however, it does bring life and conveys to the reader the deep bond fans have to this game...
