The Catcher in the Rye- Thesis and Three Paragraphs Salinger suggests that love is an emotion that even people who are have(ing) trouble with their own life feel. This is shown through Holden's relationship with Allie, Jane, and Phoebe. Holden shows love through his relationship with Allie. Allie is Holden’s younger brother who died of leukemia. Holden finds it hard coping with his brother’s death: (try to integrate more and don't use ":" in your lead-in) “I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it” (39). Holden only wishes that he broke all the windows just because he wanted to, but he probably could not live without his brother. As a result, Holden hurt himself to try to get his mind off of his brother. However, Holden wrote a composition about Allie's mitt because it was one of the things he loved about his brother. He says, "He was left-handed. The thing that was descriptive about it, though, was that he had poems written all over the fingers and the pocket and everywhere" (38). Holden likes to talk about Allie's mitt because it makes him realize and remember what type of person Allie was and what he liked.
