Legalize Marijuana
"Penalties against drug use should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself. Nowhere is this more clear than in than in the laws against the possession of marijuana in private for personal use." President Jimmy Carter (Johnson 1). There are many reasons why marijuana should be legalized; yet Congress does not seem to want to agree with the general public. Marijuana is not the gateway drug that the government portrays it, nor is it the addictive substance that some people believe it is. Medically it is not as bad as other drugs, such as tobacco or cocaine. And a final reason as to why marijuana should be legalized is that if alcohol and tobacco are worse for the body and society than marijuana, then marijuana should be, in fact, legalized.
Marijuana is not the gateway drug that it is now believed to be. The government now calls it a "stepping stone" before people become users of other drugs. Yet there has been no scientific evidence that shows that use of marijuana leads to the use of other, more potent, drugs...
