Staying in Omelas
How far would we be willing to go, what prices would we be willing to pay, to secure our own happiness? When looked at from certain perspectives, it seems that the city of Omelas has paid a high price to live in paradise: through the suffering of one, the whole lives on happily. But really what more have they done than our own society? I would rather live in my own paradise with the suffering of one child than to live in our world with the suffering of so many more.
When looked at from a third person point of view, the city of Omelas seems so much better than outside Omelas. It is an utopist city, where you have thousands of thousands of people enjoying life in paradise. There is a catch, where one child must live a life of suffering so that the rest of the people can live their perfect lives...
