"No, you're the same height I am, five-eight and a half. We're on the short side." In the novel A Separate Peace by john Knowles the two main characters Gene and Phineas, called Finny during the novel, are best friends as well as roommates in an esteemed boarding school in New Hampshire named Devon. Throughout the novel the two boys go through many obstacles in their friendship while they are maturing and becoming men. Gene being insecure and very jealous and Finny being self assured and modest make them quite different. Although the author Knowles shows us how different Gene and Finny are, but they are actually more similar than different. While there ebing many similarities between them Gene and Finny are very different than the other boys at Devon.
One similarity between Gene and Finny is that they both excel in someway or another. On page 8 Gene explains how superior of an athlete Finny really is with saying "even as a Lower Middler Phineas had been the best athlete in the school." This quote is exclaiming how great of an athlete Finny was even though he was not as old as the other boys at Devon...
