Escape to Mars
Atomic war threatens to destroy the Earth, so man looks to the planet Mars for society's salvation. The theme of The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury warns its readers that to make a new start may only be a repeat of past mistakes. Man should learn from his mistakes because his future is usually based on what was learned in the past. Bradbury's demonstrates this theme when he describes how the Earth people decide to leave Earth because they fear an atomic war is coming, but they take everything from Earth and reproduce it on Mars. Bradbury also highlights the theme in the description of man's inability to accept differences in people because of ignorance and fear. Another example is his illustration of how people think it is more important to go along with a group opinion than be an individual different from the group. Bradbury's Chronicles help the reader see how much their past affects and can become their future.
The fourth expedition to explore Mars is the first evidence of how Earth people repeat mistakes from the past. The Earth settlers of the fourth expedition found a planet where the Martians were dead and their cities abandoned. These settlers took only a little interest in why the Martians died, no interest in why the first three expeditions failed, or why the Martian society failed...
