Religion is a touchy subject all over the world because almost everyone has their own unique beliefs about God and the afterlife. Religion in the South is no different, except for the fact that in the South people tend to get extremely emotional about their religion. Not only are they emotional about the good and bad times that their God has provided in their lives, but they are also just as emotional in the ways that they worship. The South is mostly made up of people who are Christians, although the South does have many different types of Christians ranging from Presbyterians to Fundamentalists. Unlike anywhere else in America, the South has a church on almost every corner and a strong religious community that supports each one. Southerners are considered the most traditional and conservative people in America and this is in part because they hold such strong religious beliefs. Religion in the South can be a powerful tool to motivate and bring people together through their common beliefs or it can be a force that drives people apart and brings them to hatred.
Fundamentalism is one of the strongest emerging new beliefs in the South. Its basic principles are that everything in the bible should be taken literally and that everyone who does not follow God's word is evil. The idea of fundamentalism is relatively new in the South as it began to become a serious religious theme during the 1970's, but this set of beliefs has already brought many Southerners together...
