John and Elizabeth Proctor change significantly throughout the play, having them learn about themselves and each other. The situations they are put in make them face things they never wanted to talk about. They go through a big power struggle that leaves them helpless and out of control.
John Proctor is a good man but hides a secret within him. His lust for Abigail led to their affair, which sets off the witch trials. Once the trials begin, Proctor realizes the only way to stop Abigail is to admit to his adultery. He hesitates on this because it would ruin his good name and Proctor was a proud man. He wanted to keep his self-pride and his high reputation in the town. When Proctor tried to convince everyone that the girls were lying, he was being very bold because children were thought to be innocent at that time. When he signs the confession and later tears it up, it shows that he cared more about his belief than his life...
