Hannibal of Carthage was one of the greatest military leaders the world has ever known. Throughout his 17 year campaign Hannibal never lost a battle while in Roman lands. However in this time Hannibal was never able to conquer Rome and was left to wondering the countryside between battles. ... It is evident, since he never lost a battle, that it was not the Roman army that kept him from defeating the Romans, instead it was the Roman people that caused Hannibal’s plan to fail.
While Hannibal was in Rome the Roman army did very little to hinder him in furthering his conquest over Rome. From the time that Hannibal first arrived in Rome he consistently outmatched the Roman military leaders in warfare and in general. ... Perhaps the best example of Hannibal’s superiority over the Romans was seen at the battle of Cannae, 2 years into his campaign. ... Hannibal deployed his troops in a crescent shape with Turks and Spaniards in the middle to take the brunt of the attack. ... In this way Hannibal won the battle killing 20 000 Romans and capturing10 000 . The rest of the Roman army returned to Rome carrying tales of Hannibal’s genius. Constantly changing his tactics while he was in Rome, Hannibal wreaked havoc in the Roman army and was constantly reevaluating the Roman generals.
