Descarte's Angel: Reflections on the True Art of Thinking by Theodore Roszak states in his essay the belief that computers are being thought of today as a means to create ideas rather then carry out ideas. Roszak believes that students are beginning to use computers in all aspects of life when perhaps they should be a basic aid at best. The misuse of computers is evident in today's society from our students to even our way of thinking.
Roszak notes that in life even our daily routines, thought to be simple actions, "have defied the best efforts of cognitive scientists to program them" (390). He states that "the mind works more by way of gestalts than by algorithmic procedures" (390). He means that the complex interactions of human thought cannot be explained in a simple pattern that can be analyzed and repeated. Rather, the mind works on such a multileveled system that computers can never compete with it. Roszak claims that "the subliminal lesson that is being taught whenever the computer is used (unless a careful effort is made to offset that effect) is the data processing model" (393).
