A League of Their Own?
The photograph All-Americans in Training at Opa-Locka, Florida is a snapshot from a baseball game of the All-American Girl's Professional Baseball League. It shows a girl sliding into home base with the catcher and the umpire standing over the plate. Looking closer at the photograph, one can tell that the catcher is holding the ball though it is hidden in her gloved hand. The umpire has not yet made his call and a cloud of dust covers the plate. The viewer cannot yet tell if the girl is safe or out. The cloud of dust covers both the base-runner's and the catcher's feet, making it impossible to distinguish the outcome of the play. The cloud over the plate reflects the same uncertainty of the future of the league.
