Harvey Milk, an openly gay San Francisco politician assassinated in 1978, is one of many homosexuals treated unfairly for his beliefs. Homophobia continues to be a growing issue within society effecting the lives of many Americans especially young adults. Gay teens is public schools are subjected to intense bullying disallowing them to receive adequate education. "GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender) youth feel they have no where to turn" (Reis 12). Inspired by the problems homosexual students face the Hetrick-Martin Institute created the first public high school for gay students. Educating teenagers on sexual orientation, rather than segregating peers, is a solution benefitting all students. Separating gay, lesbian, and transsexual students from their heterosexual peers is irrational.
Separating gay, lesbian, and transsexual students provides temporary relief from bullying issues but ultimately avoids fixing the problem. "Kids are picked on for a lot of different reasons. Pulling kids out based on their differences postpones dealing with the real issues"(2), stated Mike Long, a conservative party chairman in New York, where the exclusively gay school is being expanded...
