Manic_Depressive Ilness
Manic-Depressive illness is approximately found in 1.9 million people in the United
States and has a total cost of 45 billion dollars.Manic-Depressive illness also known as
Bipolar dissorder is a serious illness and has nothing to do with being insane. Manic-
Depressive illness has been less common in the last centuries and it appears to increase over
the centuries.(Torrey and Knable 3) Only half of all individuals with bipolar dissorder are
treated with medication and by doctors while half are untreated.(Torrey and Knable 4)
Manic-Depressive illness has two phases the manic and the depressive one.To qualify for a
diagnosis a person has to go through the manic phase but not necessarily have a depressive
phase although most people have both.(Torrey and Knable 45)The criterion for a mania
phase is if a person has for at least one week three or more of the following symptoms
decreased sleep,more talkative than usual,inflated self esteem racing thoughts,distractibility,
increase in goal-directed activity or an excessive involvement in pleasureable activities that
have a high potential for painful consequences.These symptoms are present all the time
during the phase of mania which means even when a manic-depressed person tries to go to
sleep thougths are still going(Torrey and Knable 47) A phase of depression in a bipolar
person goes for at least two weeks and includes at least either depressed and a sad mood
most of the day or an interst loss of almost everything or it can include both.Other symptoms
are insomnia ,loss of energy and change of weights...
