The Affects of Single Parent Households On Children's Development and Educational Attainment
An ideal environment for a child's development would be one in which they are supported, guided, encouraged to learn, and loved. Single parent households are certainly capable of providing these elements just as two parent households are. However, most studies show that the affects of single parent households on the children that are raised within them are more often than not, negative. There are several situations that might cause a family to be headed by only one parent. Divorce is a common cause of single parent status and is also a common negative influence on children's development within our society. Spousal death also can leave a family with only one parent, but the affects of this type of single parent upbringing are usually much different than divorce. A common trend that is seen today is the "never married" single parent families. Many women are opting to have children without a spouse, or father figure in their children's lives. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the affects of the different types of single parent families on the children raised within them.
