The Roman Empire was the greatest empire in its day, starting as a republic and moving towards fascism. The founding of Rome, which started roughly in the year 625 BC was a small town on the seven famous hills on which it stood. Rome grew and grew, consuming more and more land, with more people flocking to it than any other civilization. Soon, it became the centre of the world, which it would remain for a very long time. Now the late republic started and with it came much social change. In this period of time, there were three prominent figures that stood out more than anyone else. These three men were all consuls or emperors. They all contributed much to the Roman Empire so the purpose of this essay to determine which of the three proved to be the most beneficial to the Roman Empire and how they came to power. These three men are Gaius Marius, Caesar, and his adopted son Octavian.
