The vision of a land full of opportunities where is seems as if a pot of gold appears every time one turns a corner is what many Jewish immigrants had envisioned when coming to what they foresaw as their freedom, America. However, as soon as these newly formed Americans took a step off the ferry that was supposed to lead them to the ‘new promised land’ they began a lifestyle that was anything but what had been prophesized. ... When they arrived in this great land they were taken to the immigration center where they were examined by doctors who then picked the healthy from the sick. ... While it is stereotyping to generalize what most Jewish immigrants had to go through, this explanation is not far from the reality of the matter. ... Rebecca Samuel continues to describe the hardships of the new land by tell her parents

It is appropriate to describe the land that these Jewish immigrants were coming from and America as two utterly different worlds.
