Discuss critically the contention that Modern Sport is work rather than play
Huizinga said, " Play is a quality of experience within an activity. It is fun. " When this
statement is taken and applied to modern sport anomalies begin to appear. Is the modern
sports person having fun? Are they simply earning a living in a professional, highly paid
arena. It seems that when the modern sports person is " playing " the last thing they are
doing is playing for is fun. This must be due to the complete lack of characteristics
associated with play within their sport.
Play is defined as;
A free activity, generally non-serious and outside the maintenance of life: eg children playing with toys.
It could be characterised as spontaneous, self-fulfilling, childlike and full of intrinsic
rewards. If we apply these characteristics to any sport you have to go all the way down
to children playing in a street to fulfil the above criteria...
