Soap Operas- an analysis
"Eastenders"
Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Neighbours and Home and Away plus many others fall in the genre of Soap operas and happen to be favourites amongst UK audiences today. In many ways, soap operas reflect different types of society in today's world. Whether the place is London, Birmingham or even Australia the issues and attitudes are typical of the stories in the press and of real life. The aim of most soaps is to make them as realistic as possible but often the way they are represented is ambiguous, exaggerated and problematic. Soaps are an on-going show about a group of people and their daily lives. They appear everyday-or nearly everyday and don't have series, so they never stop until it is cancelled. The characteristics are that it is about the same group of people although there may be character changes, and the story line develops at a slow pace, although you might not think that with Eastenders. The only differences between soaps are the settings, for example, Neighbours is set in Australia, Eastenders in eastern London and Emmerdale in Yorkshire. These factors only occasionally change what issues appear during soaps each week for example, going to the beach, robbing a bank or stealing sheep which is very rare. The reason why they are so popular may be to do with the fact that they are escapist, people can get really involved and can forget their problems...
