Drugs are a serious problem in today's society. Drugs are used by a variety of people ranging from children in elementary school to elderly people on their deathbeds, from punks to lawyers, coaches to athletes, and students to teachers. Unfortunately, there is no indication at the present time that there will be a decline in drug use or drug trafficking in the near future. So, what is the solution to the drug abuse in the United States? That is a critical question that gets numerous responses, none of which seem to be altering the immense problem we are facing today.
One of the present solutions to the current drug issue is mandatory drug sentencing. It is my opinion that mandatory drug sentencing is ridiculous and does not minimize the problem. This course of action seems ineffective in convicting the most serious drug offenders. Instead, mandatory drug sentencing appears to target the little guy while the drug lords go free.
