Bipolar disorder can be a rather frightening emotional roller-coaster ride. Kay Redfield Jamison describes this ride in detail in her book An Unquiet Mind. From the soaring highs of mania to the unimaginably low depths of depression, we are given a window into the roller coaster that is bipolar disorder. It is an interesting disorder, one filled with rather vivid, sometimes disturbing, images. Reading about bipolar disorder in a textbook and reading a first-hand account, like Dr. Jamison’s, are two very different things. When reading about the causes, symptoms, and treatments, it’s easy to forget the devastating effects it has on the lives of those who suffer from it. Textbooks tend to give cold and impersonal interpretations of disorders. This book is anything but cold and impersonal. Almost right away, I felt compelled to care about Dr. Jamison. Reading this book has given me a new understanding and deeper level of compassion for those with this disorder. I knew the symptoms of mania before I read this book, but it wasn’t until I after I’d read the book that I truly understood them. The amounts of money that Jamison spent during her severe manic episodes are just astounding. I can’t imagine spending that much money in such short spurts of time. Her descriptions on pages 90-92 are both colorful and imaginative. Her descriptions on pages 79-80 are both frightening and confusing. It was frightening because she interprets it as reality and therefore presents it that way. It seems very realistic and at first was difficult to know what was real and what wasn’t.
