Art Essay
Teffany Theideman is one of Australia's most promising Contemporary Australian ceramic artists. Born and raised in Australia she has an excellent imagination and feel for clay, her wonderful ideas are welded together with the help of those very professional hands. This particular piece, which goes by the name Kanto was made in the winter of 1996, using clay, fabrics and wire she has made a very expressive and vibrant piece of art.
Kanto is a very self descriptive piece, with the bright reds, oranges and yellow's extracted onto a sort of spiritual god you can pick up ideas and thoughts in which she is trying to express through Kanto. The piece does seem to represent some kind of demon or dragon that may not be of an evil background, but of a peaceful and kind nature. Kanto is also chanting with two of its 6 arms crossed. Kanto from what I know is a singular piece with no family or sequels adding to it. It looks as though Teffany has used her hands only as it is a rather rough and bumpy looking surface.
Kanto is a rather symmetrical piece as far as the legs, arms and face go. It is a well built and solid structure as it is free standing...
