Pediatricians can also participate in research to help benefit all children and public education, such as providing guidelines for safe participation in athletics. Pediatricians watch infants grow into healthy adolences. It is very important to be selective in finding a right pediatrician for the care of the family. Before interviewing a pediatrician one can check with the Federation of State Medical Boards to see if they have any serious disciplinary actions, or professional peer reviews against the pediatrician. Parents are advised to begin looking for a pediatrician before the baby is due. It is necessary to select a pediatrician before birth so that he or she can examine the newborn right after birth. In additional, new parents should feel comfortable with the pediatrician they select because they will be giving the important advise and medical care for the precious child. A pediatrician should be warm, compassionate, and opened minded to a patients thoughts and feelings, and share similar views. First, the career steps in becoming a successful pediatrician are not easy. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. A pediatrician receives extensive training that begins with four years of medical school with three additional years of residency training solely in pediatrics. This means they are doctors with at least three years supervised training where they acquire the skills to treat a broad range of afflictions from basic childhood illnesses to the most serious of diseases. After finishing residency, a written examination must be passed by the American Board of Pediatrics. Only pediatricians who have passed the certification examination can join the American Academy of Pediatrics. Pediatricians may choose to pursue a more specific area of pediatrics, which is known as subspecialty. Subspecialties may include: adolescents medicine; allergy/immunology; ambulatory pediatrics; behavioral/development pediatrics; cardiology; child development; community pediatrics; critical care and much more. Most specifically, the career path and steps into becoming a pediatrician should be as follows: in college, one should enroll in premed program if interested in going into medicine. A student is considered to volunteer at a local hospital or with emergency medical services. During the last year of collage, who apply for medical school and take the MCAT. The four-year program at medical school encompasses clinical work and book learning, with two years in the classroom and two years in clinical setting. Clinical study takes place at local hospitals or medical practices. Students are expected to offer diagnosis and suggest courses of treatment in real-life situations, although an MD/instructor makes the final decisions. In standard programs, students enter clinical clerkships in their third year and in their fourth year students can choose among various elective subspecialties. Students also spend the fourth year apply for internship. After four years, students sit for the USMLE (medical boards), and those who pass receive their medical degrees. A three- year internship and residency are next, although many specialists require a longer training commitment. Residents work long hours and are expected to put their classroom experience into practice right away. They must quickly learn the difference between books and people. Interns and residents work under a doctor’s supervision until making the final requirements to be on his or her own. After about five years, a full partnership may follow. Interest in attracting and keeping patients comes with working one’s way up the ladder. These new doctors now have the responsibilities in managing the duties that come with running a business. Experienced and professional pediatricians devote more time to clinical work and have the same patients year after year. Pediatricians are in highly demand around the world. The number of people in the physician profession is 600,000. Eighty percent are male and the other twenty percent are female. Therefore, there is a high demand for women in this field. Pediatricians are needed in all areas of specialties. One recruiting company called the Arrowhead Physician Recruiting and Placements announced over seventy-five opportunities at many clinics around the country. Pediatricians have all different work environments.
