My Son the Fanatic
Many people try to guide others to a prosperous future, and that effort sometimes causes them to take a different path. "My Son the Fanatic," by Hanif Kureishi is a story about a father who moves to England in hopes of a better live for his son. His son rejects everything that has to do with western civilization, and embarks on a religious path to spiritual utopia. In "My Son the Fanatic" the setting supports the central idea that people who are forced to lead a life chosen by someone else, will often follow their own path.
The time of day and time period of this story is illustrated for a purpose. In the beginning of the story the protagonist describes the possessions which his son throws out (639). He mentions video games and a computer, which were not developed until the late 1900's. So it is assumed that the story takes place after the late 1990s. Later in the story, Parvez is watching a Sylvester Stallone film with two of his closest friends at work (640). Rocky was released in 1978, and since this was the film that made Sylvester Stallone famous it can be concluded that the story is post 1978...
