The Count of Monte Cristo is an epic tale of a young man whose luck, or misfortune, seems to flicker and how that effects his character. Edmond Dantes takes on a variety of aliases to complete his masterful plan of revenge, avenge, and reward. This blissful sailor's life takes a traumatic turn for the worse which leads to his imprisonment as well as his metamorphosis into The Count of Monte Cristo.
Dantes, who is 19, lives in the small city of Marseilles where he is a first mate for Monsieur Morrel who owns several ships in the area. On a voyage the captain becomes ill and Dantes assumes command of the Pharaon. The ship owner is impressed with Dante's skillful job of temporary captain and tells Dantes he would like him to be the permanent replacement of Captain Leclere.
The envious treasurer of the ship, Baron Danglars, soon learns of this and also that Edmond is carrying a letter from Napoleon to be delivered in France due to the Captain's dying request.
When Edmond returns to the mainland he visits his beautiful fianc, Mercedes. She is found with her cousin who answers to the name Fernand Mondego who is Dantes' rival for Mercedes' love. Fernand disrespects Dantes and leaves the scene while Dantes and Mercedes converse about the upcoming wedding...
