In Adam Hochschild’s King Leopold’s Ghost the main character’s drive to colonize the Congo is based on two simple yet overpowering and controlling forces; political power and achievement and Leopold’s own personal drive to elevate his economic status to that of neighboring countries which were already developed. King Leopold II knew that colonization of Africa would increase his territorial rule and strengthen the importance of a nation, Belgium, that was growing and expanding everyday. Also, King Leopold II knew that colonization of the Congo would tie him directly into trading options with other countries and raise his economic status.
King Leopold II could easily be described as a ruthless power hungry ruler whose main goal was to expand Belgium and strengthen and develop it as major country in Europe. ...
Control of the Congo had many political advantages that benefitted King Leopold’s political position in the world. A major political force that made the colonization of the Congo possible for the King was the fact that Belgium was a small developing nation and therefore needed some direction from a strong leader. ... From November 1884 to February 1885 a conference was held that landed King Leopold one of the most valuable and important pieces of land in the Congo. The King was granted a piece that contained the seaport of Matadi, which was located on the lower part of the river. ... Since it was a know fact that the French were in great want of this seaport King Leopold used these facts to expand the land he was granted.
