Salem Possessed

In Salem Possessed, Stephen Nissenbaum and Paul Boyer argue that the the cause of the Salem witch trials of 1692 was socio-political and economic division among the Salem Villagers. Salem Village was divided into two separate factions, which were led by two families. The Putnam family, which was interested in becoming autonomous from Salem town, led one faction, and the Porter family led the other faction. This other faction was more interested in the social lifestyle of Salem Town. It is interesting to note that most of the Porter led faction actually lived in Salem Town, not in Salem Village. ... Salem Village had petitioned for and gained a separate church, and therefore had a separate minister from that of Salem Town.
