What makes the United States one of the greatest countries in the world to live in? Is it the civil liberties and freedoms or the opportunity we are provided with? It is both of these things. On October 26, 2001 President Bush signed the Patriot Act into law. This Act is a highly controversial law that has according to many, taken away many of the basic constitutional rights that we enjoy everyday. The Patriot Act is designed to give new powers to both domestic law enforcement international intelligence agencies. The checks and balances that the courts previously had over many of these powers are now all but a memory. It allows for the unrestricted use of a wide variety of surveillance techniques that can be used on anyone the government sees fit.
