In Louis’s case this is an example of negative reinforcement. Negative reinforcement is when a consequence is presented dependent on a behavior, the behavior becomes more likely to occur, and the behavior becomes more likely to occur because the consequence is removed dependent on the behavior. Louis is asked to practice a independent living task. Specifically when his worker asks him to sort the laundry, Louis becomes verbally and physically aggressive. He screams, “you idiot, I hate you, I don’t have to do this “ as he throws something at his worker and runs away. He hides in the house until someone finds him. By that time the task is completely forgotten. His mother yells at him and asks him to go to his room and thinks about what he has done. He is denied television and dessert. He agrees that next time he will try to do better, but each future attempt turns out the same way. The natural consequences of this example is his mother and the worker send him to his room yell at him, and is denied dessert and television, and promises to do better next time.
