6. Discuss how race and gender played significant roles in one or all the literature this semeste
In this life you are either a male or female(for the most part). And just as gender plays a role in todays society, it effected the characters real or fictional in the storys we have read this semester. Race also affected how the characters acted and how they treated other people. At the time the play was written, 1604, even the Queen of England was racist so there must have been a strong hatred of blacks around that time. I have choosen to single out Shakesphere's famous play Othello because of the variety of characters in it and it was my favorite reading from this semester.
The most obious role of race in Othello is the fact that the main character Othello is a moor(a black man of power and wealth in shakespheres time). There is a romantic union between black man and a white woman that gets ruined, because most people view this as "evil" at that time. Othello is in service to the state of the Venetian state as a general and has many loyal men under his command, including the evil Iago as his ancient, and Cassio as his lieutenant. Iago is in resentment of Othello because of his power, the fact that Othello passed him over for promotion and because Iago beleives that Othello has slept with his wife...
