Plato describes something similar in the allegory of the cave. The teacher Socrates teaches the student Glaucon about a cave where a few men have been kept for their entire lives. These men have had their heads and feet tied so as they cannot see anything but the back wall of the cave. ... The captors of the men move about the way and bring sculptures of men and animals in and out of the cave, in a way that the men can only see the shadows of them, the captors, and themselves. Socrates then goes on to describe what would happen if one of the men were to be taken out of the cave, and showed the real world. “Obviously, he will be confused when emerging from the cave into the visible world” (Popkin and stroll 193).
