The controversy right now over file sharing isn't all that hard to figure out. People are sharing media files (music) and the Recording Industry Association of America, known as the RIAA, don't like it and isn't going to put up with it. The RIAA are trying to target the people allowing the others to download music from them, and the Peer-to-Peer (p2p) software providers that allow users to share files. The RIAA says they are not going to put up with it and has already filed 261 lawsuits against music listeners, 52 of which have already been settled. The RIAA plans to file another group of lawsuits against music listeners next month. They seem to be going after users who they consider "major offenders" that download usually more than 1,000 songs.
A lot of people thing that the major causes for the RIAA's actions are profit losses. If they wouldn't be losing profits then a lot of this controversy wouldn't be much of a problem. Profits are going down because the music is being bought by less people but listened to more. This is because few people are buying the CD and then putting it on the internet for others to download for free...
