Bacon wrote of the four idols that made up human behavior in the late 1500’s, and early 1600’s. During this time he classified human behavior into these four groups; Idols of the tribes, the cave, the marketplace, and the theatre. Each of these subdivisions described a different aspect of human nature. The idols of the tribe are named to show their thoughts about human nature; idols of the cave are named according to people’s hindrances based upon other’s shortcomings; idols of the marketplace are based upon people’s knowledge of vocabulary; idols of the theatre speaks of people’s understanding based upon a system of philosophy, theology, or tradition (“Points by Sir Francis Bacon,” n.d.). If Francis Bacon was around today in the 21st century, many new idols could possibly be created based upon peoples self perceptions. In today’s world, people find themselves preoccupied with theories of ethnocentrism. According to Webref.com, ethnocentrism is defined “to be centered on one’s own culture.” For example, ethnocentrism is to interpret the behavior of people in other cultures in the light of ones’ own values, or attitudes (“Ethnocentrism,” 2003).
