"The Cask of Amontillado"
Many critics have stated that "The Cask of Amontillado", is one of Edgar Allan Poe's greatest short stories. Poe is known for his inner turmoil and obsession with death. This turmoil is evident in "The Cask of Amontillado", where Poe's character, Montresor, is obsessed with the murder of his enemy Fortunato. Montresor's inner turmoil over the insults stated by Fortunato has driven him to the obsession of revenge, uncontrollable madness, and murder.
Montresor's obsession of revenge against Fortunato took over his life. He displayed kindness and friendliness to his enemy, but his soul was eaten up with revenge. This revenge took great planning and control before it could be accomplished. Montresor planned the "perfect revenge", one that could not be traceable, heard, or seen by anyone else. He planned every aspect of the revenge from the meeting place, the clearing of his house, his mask worn to the carnival, and the number of bricks needed to enclose Fortunato to his death. Montresor vowed that he would receive full satisfaction for Fortunato's insult against him and his family's name...
