INTRODUCTION
Advanced Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the leading killer in sub-Saharan Africa. (Simpson, 2002) Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and AIDS are the same disease, but AIDS succeeds HIV when the red blood cell count in a HIV-positive persons blood descends below a dangerous level. 70 Percent of the world’s HIV infection and 90 percent of the deaths from AIDS are found in this region of Africa, which contains 10 percent of the world’s population. (Simpson, 2002) In 1991, the World Health Organization originally projected that in 1999 there would be 9 million people infected with HIV and almost 5 million cumulative deaths from AIDS. ... (Hammer, 2000) The infection rates of HIV and AIDS are continuing to increase. ... (Vit, 2002)
A number of organizations at the global, national, and local levels in Africa and around the world have been founded to take decisive action in order to check the massive destruction created by HIV and AIDS. UNAIDS is a joint committee of the United Nations (UN) composed from nine global agencies whose foremost goals are defined as “to lead, strengthen and support an expanded response aimed at preventing transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic. ... Currently, the most significant conclusions this coalition has formed include: youth responsiveness to UNAIDS formulated programs, reducing the vulnerability of high-risk people, supporting peer groups in high prevalence communities, and assisting with palliative care for individuals living with HIV or AIDS are achievable in extremely conservative societies, such as those of sub-Saharan Africa, through the engagement and expansion of current education, religion and primary health care programs.
The UN chose, under the direction of UNAIDS, to endorse the use of condoms and other contraceptives in order to restrict the rapid spreading of HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa by distributing condoms in schools and in reproductive health care facilities. ... A position found in organized religion via the appointed Pope damages the UN campaign, and thus will negatively influence the economy of Africa through the substantial cost of treatment for HIV and AIDS patients and the dramatic damage to the African workforce.
