The role of women has been constantly changing throughout the years. One of the current issues concerns the role of women athletes in the male dominant sports world. Women athletes have been on the rise since the passing of Title IX in 1972. Title IX claims that there should be no discrimination of sex by any of the schools receiving government funding. This has enabled women to have the chance to not only participate but also to prove themselves against the stereotype in which they have already received. Before 1972, there were only 294,000 girls who played high school sports, compared with the 2 million that are participating today. Although things seem to be getting better inequality still exists in sports. This paper will review some of the issues of inequality with women in sports, as well as the stereotypes women receive playing particular sports, and a review of the interventions that could be used to improve equality of women in sports.
Looking at the intercollegiate level enables us to realize the actual differences between male and female sports teams. At the University level, female athletes always seem to come up short handed...
