Empathic Listening: An Art With A Heart
Stop, look, and listen are simple word commands taught to preschoolers. Proudly the youngsters repeat the words, but training them to listen stops at this point. The "process" is more involved when viewed through the interpersonal communications (IPC) scope. Stop, give the speaker full attention. Look, give the speaker eye contact. Listen; focus on the speaker's verbal message. These simple steps, when executed properly, are the receiving side of all IPC. Truly connecting with another person requires a combination of awareness and IPC skills, which is known as empathic listening or "listening with your heart". A good example of how learning empathic listening can enrich one's life it the movie, "The Doctor". The main character in this movie depicts the metamorphosis of pseudolistening to empathic listening, or properly executing the simple steps in this process...
