Short narrative synopsis
Russell Crow plays Maximus, the top general in the great Roman Army. He has a wife and an 8-year-old son that he loves dearly but hasn't seen them in over 2 years because he has been serving loyally Marcus AurelIus Caesar, (Richard Harris). The army of Marcus Aurelius is just finishing their last battle, and Maximus is looking forward to returning home to his wife and son to live a life of a peaceful farmer.
Marcus AurelIus suddenly falls ill and is about to die. Marcus Aurelius respects and honours Maximus. In a private conversation with tells him that his son Commodus (JaquIn Phoenix) Is not capable of leading Rome so he wants to hand over the power to Maximus. Maximus is not trilled with the Idea for he has no knowledge of politics, but before he can give an Emperor an answer, Commodus kills his father Marcus AurelIus and becomes the biological heir to the throne.
The first thing he does is orders the death of Maximus...
