The article ‘Happy Endings’ dated November 2002 by Janis Risotto focuses on the completion and hand-over stage of a project. The author mainly talked about what is highly recommended for the close - out phase to ensure a smooth and efficient execution of the project. She gathered ideas and experiences from project managers to reinforce her views on the topic. The completion or close - out phase of a project is all about improving the project to gain maximum benefits by making corrections to completed tasks obtained from the feedback of team members. Sometimes, however, this final but important stage of a project is not taken seriously. Project managers usually rush through this phase in order to quickly get to the next project. This hinders effective documentation and efficient reviews resulting in pitfalls when the project begins its operation. Suzan Fancheus, program manager, EDS Operations Solutions said,” Project managers don’t place as much importance on close - out as they need to. It is one of the most important phases of project work.” “Skipping this phase has repercussions,” said Janis Rizzuto. By- passing this stage may and sometimes do result in major drawbacks of the project and the opinions and expectations of the customers and stakeholders may falter. Once the main part of the work is completed it is very tempting to move on rather than ensure that the work is completed and the maximum benefit yieldedfrom it. How the last phases of ‘check and act on the results of the checks’ are managed will determine to a large extent the views of stakeholders on the outcomes as well as set the chances of future project success. As a reinforcement or example of this point Janis Rizzuto stated in the article “Project managers study ‘hit and miss’ milestones, collect feedback on project methods and deliveries, and seek ways to do better. The process is often pre-empted by the need to get to the next project.” It is imperative that this phase of the project is carried out to the best of the team’s ability taking time, cost, resources, quality and efficient project execution into consideration.
