In December 1915, there was a stalemate on the Western Front. Although many attacks were launched, neither side had made any progress towards victory. On December 10th 1915, a new British commander was appointed. He was called Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig. At that time, the British thought he would be the best man for this job.
However, during this war, more British died than any battle before it. Many people think it was Haig's fault and blamed him for being a bad commander, sending soldiers to their deaths. That earned him a nickname 'The Butcher of the Somme'. He was like a butcher chopping the meat (the soldiers) heartlessly and mercilessly. However, this is only one point of view...
