Jamaica was colinized by Spain in the early part of the 15th century. After the rapid decline of the indian population, many slave from Africa were imported. In 1655, the british deprived the spanish of Jamaica who left their slaves in the coutry. These salves were called « Maroons ».The term « Maroon » took on the signifacation of « proud and savage » with time. So, the Marroons opposed british domination and led a fierce struggle for independence. The Marroons’ struggle must not be considered a simple slave’s revolt. It’s lentgh indicate a profound will to fight against slavery and it is to be noticed that this deep desire is linked to a strong ethnic cohesion withon the rebel groups. Indeed, the leaders of the « Maroons » came from the same Ghanaian tribe and the mouvement wanted to assert its african identity and its independence. Many rebellions appeared and caracterized the will to claim a complete freedom like this sought in the « Sam Sharpe Rebellion » in 1831. This revolt led by a slave Samuel Sharpe occured at a crucial moment for the black population. In fact, they began to be aware of teir own socio-economic situation comparing themselves with the haitian slaves, who had been free since 1815. Sam Sharpe was one of the most educated slaves and had a powerful charismatic influence. In 1831, he decided to take command of an important rebellion the result of which would be the abolitin on slavery in Jamaice. The rebellion began at the end of december 1831 in Montego bay situated in the north west of Jamaica. The rebellion quickly spread into the whole western teritory and drove the settlers to take flight. In the beginning of the year 1832, martial law was declared and reinforcements were sent. So, the revolt was crushed in few mounth and Sam Sharpe was executed at the end of May 1832. AT any rate, this fight led to the abolition of lavery in 1834. Nevertheless in 1835, a new spirit of revolt arose in the country. It’s the « Morant bay Rebellion ».This rebellion is caracterized by causes directly linked to the revolution of the Marroons the majority of which had become planters after the end of the rebellion.
