Kate Chopin is famous for her stories that analyze the mental boundaries of the female. The Awakening is one of Kate Chopin’s most controversial novels. The book received a very bad welcoming at the time it was published. The Awakening is a journey into the spiritual, emotional, and psychical growth of a young woman. This growth comes with certain consequences. Throughout the book, Kate Chopin uses several literary devices to convey the ever-changing Edna Pontellier, the main character. Chopin used several symbols including: swimming and birds to show the progress of Edna through the story. The story’s opening setting is a small vacationing isle off of Louisiana. One of the major past times on this isle is what was referred to as “bathing.” “Bathing” is simply another way to convey swimming.
