Family
Family is the basic social group united through bonds of kinship or marriage, present in all societies. (“Family”) Ideally, the family provides its members with protection, companionship, security, and socialization. The structure of the family and the needs that the family fulfills vary from society to society. The only function of the family that continues to survive all change is the provision of affection and emotional support by and to all its members, particularly infants and young children. How you were supported by your family, doesn’t determine if you’re going to succeed in education or not. ... I always felt I could be honest with my family; we would always keep everything out in the open. ... I was close with my extended family from both of my parents too. ... We would even take family trips up north or around the state. ... Now looking back I feel I was never deprived of knowing my heritage and having a close family to feel loved and appreciated. ... (McBride 98) As far as extended family, McBride only knew his step-father’s daughter from a previous marriage, who he only saw once.
