Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis, which means porous bones, is a disease that causes your bones to become weak and brittle. Density and quality of bones are reduced, which can lead to a weak skeleton and an increase risk of fractures, mainly in the spine, wrist, hip, pelvis and upper arm. It is also referred to as the "silent epidemic". Osteoporosis causes about 1.5 million fractures each year. Excessive usage of drugs such as corticosteroids can also result from osteoporosis. Many people think of osteoporosis as "an old woman's disease". Women can acquire this disease as early of an age of 25. 8 million American women and 2 million men have osteoporosis.
