Radiation Effects on Humans
Radiation can have a wonderful or damaging effect on humans. It is a part of life in natural and man-made forms. To understand the effects radiation has on humans, an overview of the atom structure is helpful. It is also useful to understand the types of radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum and the consequences of ionizing radiation exposure. And, finally, it is important not to forget the beneficial use of radiation to diagnose ailments and save lives.
The atom is made of a nucleus and electrons. The nucleus contains neutrons and protons. Neutrons have no electrical charge and protons are positively charged. Electrons are negatively charged and orbit the nucleus. The opposite charge of the electrons and protons acts as the glue that hold the atom together...
