Currently the citizens in the United States are directly in the middle of an on going drug war. It is the war with more sides than two, and it is one being lost at a dramatic rate. The United States "war on drugs" primarily began during the Regan administration. This type of war cannot be won without more diversity from the offensive side. Drugs are a serious problem in the United States, but it is a problem that over time can be rectified. Punitive drug laws enacted in the 1980s, and to the present, have resulted in 25% of all prisoners in the United States serving time for a drug law violation. In the federal system, these people make up about 60% of the prison population Drugs are substances that directly or indirectly affect everyone.
The benefits of marijuana prohibition and its enforcement have long been the subject of debate. By following in several other countries footsteps by legalizing marijuana, the United States would see a significant decline in cost and prison population.
