The Arab Culture
When given the chance to research a culture of my choice. ... After careful consideration I decided that I would research the Arab culture. I chose the Arab culture because of the fact that it has been under so much scrutiny lately. I think that since the media has been paying extra attention to the Arab culture many people now have a false impression of the values and beliefs of this culture. Through this paper I hope to clarify some of the misconceptions people affiliate with the Arab culture. I also plan to provide information that is essential for people who are planning to communicate with the Arab culture. I think that many Americans view the Arab culture as violent and extreme; when in actuality they are not like this as at all. Rather, the Arab culture is a culture that places great emphasis on family loyalty and religion. ... Today, a majority of the countries with high Arab populations are bordered by the Mediterranean Sea. “Arab people come from a variety of altitudes that extend from as far south as just below the equator to as far north as approximately Lexington, KY” (Detroit Free Press). ...

Like most societies, the Arab culture places a great emphasis on family. Family is considered the “basic unit of social organization in traditional and contemporary Arab society” (Barakat, 1). Generally, in the Arab culture, “family is more important than the individual and more influential than nationality” (Detroit Free Press). The family is at the heart of Arab social organizations. ... The Arab culture is similar to most other cultures, in the fact that the family is responsible for introducing and teaching their children about religious, class, and cultural values.
The Arab culture greatly emphasizes the importance of males. The Arab family holds extremely patriarchal traditions. In the traditional Arab family, the father is considered the authority figure of the family.
